1) Strawberries

Strawberries top EWG's Dirty DozenTM list of pesticide-heavy fruits and vegetables. One sample included 22 pesticide residues.

2) Margarine

Margarine is rich in (1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-methoxy-phenol (BHA), a Canadian food additive. BHA is classified as an endocrine disruptor by the EU and a carcinogen by California.

3) Kidney beans

Hemagglutinin, a toxin found in dried kidney beans, can induce severe stomach issues. Therefore, it is essential to soak them and cook them thoroughly!

4) Deli meats

Research has established a connection between regular use of processed meats and the development of some cancers, due to nitrites in them.

5) Beets

Between 2014 and 2018, the agriculture, fishery, and food department of Quebec recorded at least 110 incidents of food poisoning caused by raw beets.

6) Potatoes

Throughout the growing season, potatoes are heavily sprayed with pesticides and insecticides; therefore, cleaning them does not eliminate the residue.

7) Celery

The Environmental Working Group found high levels of hazardous pesticides in more than 95% of the celery it tested.

8) Carrots and parsnips

If you keep these two vegetables together, they're great for you, but if you keep them next to a banana, your taste buds will suffer.

9) Baby rice cereal

Arsenic occurs naturally in rice. A CBC Marketplace and Radio-Canada investigation, however, discovered that some baby rice cereals contain concerning levels.

10) Cherries

Cherry pits, like plum and peach pits, contain amygdalin, a chemical compound that, when consumed, converts to hydrogen cyanide.

11) Cashews

Cashews should never be eaten raw due to the toxicity of the shell and the ease with which the toxin can be transmitted to the nut.
